23 July- The Evening Mysteries
The Baptism
Piazza Santa Cristina
This Mystery represents the beginning of Saint Christina’s Passion and the moment of her consecration to the Christian faith. Imprisoned by her father Urbano in a tower together with her maidservants so that she would continue to worship the pagan idols, the young Christina receives a visit from an angel, who baptises her.
From that moment on, she renounces gold, idols and earthly riches, dedicating her life entirely to Christ and embracing the Christian faith once and for all

The Wheel
Piazza Matteotti
The Mystery of the Wheel depicts one of the most significant episodes in the martyrdom of Saint Christina, the patron saint of Bolsena. Through this brutal torture, her persecutors attempt to force her to renounce her Christian faith. As the wheel turns, it tears her body and dislocates her bones, yet her faith remains unshaken.
According to tradition, the wheel miraculously breaks apart, crushing and killing the very executioners who are operating it, while Christina is saved through divine protection.
This living tableau thus becomes a powerful symbol of a faith that no violence can overcome.

The Cauldron
Piazza San Rocco
Among the many tortures inflicted upon Saint Christina, the Mystery of the Cauldron is one of the most striking episodes of her martyrdom.
The young saint is thrown into a large cauldron filled with boiling oil, resin and pitch. According to tradition, she enters it while singing praises to God and emerges completely unharmed, once again offering an extraordinary testimony to the strength of her faith.
The tableau is particularly powerful for its expressive intensity. The gazes, facial expressions and composed performances of the actors convey the drama of the scene, highlighting the contrast between the brutality of the persecutors and the serenity of the young martyr.
The Cauldron thus becomes a symbol of unwavering faith, capable of enduring even the most extreme suffering and transforming martyrdom into a testimony of hope and complete trust in God.

The Lake
Piazza San Giovanni
The Mystery of the Lake depicts one of the most celebrated episodes in the martyrdom of Saint Christina and is among those most closely connected with the history of Bolsena. The young saint is cast into the waters of Lake Bolsena with a heavy stone tied around her neck. According to tradition, angels miraculously intervene, allowing her to float upon the stone and guiding her safely to the shore.
That very stone, preserved to this day in the Basilica of Saint Christina, is said to bear the footprints of the Saint and remains an important place of devotion and pilgrimage.
The gentle movement of the waves, created through simple stage effects, makes this one of the most eagerly awaited Mysteries. Its striking visual impact and profound symbolic meaning continue to captivate spectators year after year.

The Devils
Piazza Monaldeschi
The Mystery of the Devils portrays the death of Urbano, the father and persecutor of Saint Christina, who fails in every attempt to make her renounce the Christian faith. According to tradition, after his death his soul is dragged down to Hell by the devils, symbolising the defeat of evil and the triumph of faith.
With their movements, acrobatic performances and striking interpretations, the actors portraying the devils make this the most dynamic Mystery and one of the highlights of the entire celebration. The dramatic action, culminating in Urbano being dragged into Hell, creates one of the most memorable moments of the procession.
The spectacle is made even more impressive by the magnificent Rocca Monaldeschi, whose imposing towers provide a breathtaking natural backdrop. Enhanced by pyrotechnic effects, the setting transforms this Mystery into one of the most spectacular and emotionally powerful moments of the Feast of Saint Christina.

24 July – The Morning Mysteries
On the morning of 24 July, the statue of Saint Christina leaves the Church of the Most Holy Saviour (Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore) to return to the Basilica dedicated to the town’s patron saint. The procession once again winds its way through the historic centre of Bolsena, where five remarkable living tableaux are staged in the town’s main squares: Piazza Monaldeschi, Piazza San Giovanni, Piazza San Rocco, Piazza Matteotti and Piazza Santa Cristina.
Each Mystery portrays the final episodes of Saint Christina’s martyrdom, guiding both pilgrims and visitors toward the moving conclusion of her extraordinary witness to the Christian faith.
The Rods
Piazza Monaldeschi
The Mystery of the Rods depicts one of the most well-known tortures inflicted upon Saint Christina.
The young saint is slapped and beaten with rods by twelve men, but according to tradition, her persecutors collapse one after another, exhausted and unable to weaken the strength of her faith.
The tableau relies on the facial expressions, gestures and composed performances of the actors to convey the suffering of the Saint and her unwavering devotion to Christ, transforming pain into an extraordinary testimony of courage, faith and complete trust in God.
The Snakes
Piazza San Giovanni
The Mystery of the Snakes is one of the best-known and most deeply rooted traditions of the Feast of Saint Christina in Bolsena.
Saint Christina, chained to a stake, is entrusted to the Snake Charmer (Serparo), the persecutor tasked with killing her by means of venomous snakes. According to tradition, however, the animals do not harm the young martyr. Instead, they gather around her, forming a protective shield and defending her from the attack.
The snakes then turn against the Serparo, fatally biting him with their venom. This is the moment when the famous “Tremore” (“The Trembling”) begins: the persecutor performs a distinctive sequence of movements, dramatically portraying the effects of the poison before collapsing to the ground.
The scene concludes with Christina’s chains falling away as she kneels in prayer, imploring God to restore life to her persecutor.
The tableau also conveys a profound symbolic meaning: wild nature, represented by the snakes, is overcome not through force but through faith and holiness, reaffirming the triumph of good over evil.
Please Note
The snakes used in the performance are handled with the utmost respect for their welfare. No animals are harmed during the staging of this Mystery.

The Cutting of the Tongue
Piazza San Rocco
The Mystery of the Cutting of the Tongue depicts one of the most dramatic episodes in the martyrdom of Saint Christina.
While the young saint remains perfectly still, in keeping with the tradition of the living tableaux, the executioner performs the symbolic act of cutting out her tongue. The scene is followed by the appearance of blood flowing from the Saint’s mouth, a simple yet striking theatrical effect that powerfully conveys the brutality of the moment.
According to hagiographic tradition, Christina miraculously continues to speak and hurls her tongue at the face of her father’s successor, striking his eyes and leaving him blind. This miracle once again symbolises the triumph of faith over persecution and the extraordinary spiritual strength of the young martyr, whose devotion remains unshaken even in the face of the cruelest tortures.

The Arrows
Piazza Matteotti
The Mystery of the Arrows depicts the final earthly ordeal of Saint Christina and the concluding moment of her martyrdom.
The young saint is tied to a stake and handed over to the imperial archers, who are ordered to bring her life to an end. According to hagiographic tradition, God mercifully allows the Virgin’s suffering to come to its final conclusion. Christina is struck by two arrows, one in the chest and the other in the side, while her soul rises to behold the face of Christ.
The tableau relies on the gazes, facial expressions and composed performances of the actors to convey the emotional intensity of this moment, portraying the young martyr’s death not as a defeat, but as the fulfilment of her journey of faith.
The Arrows thus symbolise the passage from suffering to eternal glory, anticipating the final Mystery, The Glory, which celebrates Saint Christina’s entrance into eternal life.

The journey concludes with the Mystery of the Glory, celebrating the completion of Saint Christina’s earthly life.
After enduring persecution and countless torments, the young martyr is portrayed in her glorification, welcomed into the light of eternal life. Her martyrdom gives way to the triumph of faith, transforming suffering into hope and revealing to the faithful the deepest meaning of the entire celebration.
The Glory brings the cycle of the Mysteries to its conclusion with a powerful message of faith, hope and salvation, reminding us that Saint Christina’s witness continues to inspire the devotion of the people of Bolsena to this day.
