Santa Cristina District
The Santa Cristina district in Bolsena is the city's oldest and most central neighborhood, known for being the focal point of Bolsena's religious and historical life.

It takes its name from the eponymous Basilica, the site of the 1263 Eucharistic Miracle and the burial place of the martyr. The district includes the Catacombs, the Basilica, and a vast residential and commercial area, making it the largest and most populous in the city.
Strolling through the streets of this district means retracing the steps of pilgrims who, since the Middle Ages, stopped here on their way to Rome. The focal point is undoubtedly the Basilica of Santa Cristina, an architectural jewel that blends Romanesque and Renaissance styles.
It is here that the famous Eucharistic Miracle took place in 1263: blood flowing from a consecrated host stained the stones of the altar, giving rise to the solemnity of Corpus Christi.
The neighborhood offers archaeological and artistic testimonies of inestimable value, such as the Grottoes of Santa Cristina; the Catacombs— a maze of underground tunnels dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries that bear witness to the early Christian communities; and the facade of the Basilica, commissioned by Cardinal Giovanni de’ Medici, which stands out for its elegance and serves as the visual symbol of the district.
The Santa Cristina District is historically contrasted with the “Castello” quarter. While the latter represents civil and defensive power, Santa Cristina embodies the strength of faith and the community’s indissoluble bond with its land.
The streets winding through the Santa Cristina District form the nerve center of daily life. Indeed, this is where the commercial heart of Bolsena beats, making the neighborhood a perfect mix of historical solemnity and contemporary dynamism.
The district is home to the main commercial activities, from clothing stores to artisan workshops, where you can find local excellence and typical products of the Tuscia region. With its proximity to services and banks, it is a vibrant and lively neighborhood.
Whether you are a pilgrim, an art lover, or a tourist in search of beauty, the Santa Cristina District welcomes you with the millennial echo of its stones.
