Route 01 – From Bolsena to Civita di Bagnoregio

Route 01 is a new cycling route connecting the port of Bolsena to the pedestrian bridge leading to Civita di Bagnoregio. The route can be followed in both directions.

Officially inaugurated on 17 October 2026 as part of the "Bici in Comune" project, it crosses some of Tuscia's most distinctive landscapes: from the shores of Lake Bolsena to the surrounding hills, through the forests of Turona and towards the spectacular scenery of the Valley of the Badlands.

A route designed to promote the area through outdoor activities, sustainable tourism and the discovery of its natural and cultural heritage.

From Lake Bolsena to the Valley of the Badlands

The starting point is the tourist harbour of Bolsena, overlooking the waters of Europe’s largest volcanic lake.

From here, Route 01 winds through country roads, olive groves, trails and scenic stretches, also following part of the Via Francigena.

The route passes through one of the area’s most interesting natural environments: the Turona Archaeological and Nature Park, known for its woodlands, streams, small waterfalls and archaeological remains.

Continuing towards Bagnoregio, the landscape gradually changes. The volcanic hills give way to the clay formations of the Valley of the Badlands, revealing spectacular views of Civita di Bagnoregio, the medieval village overlooking the valley.

The route reaches the entrance area of the famous pedestrian bridge. From here, visitors can continue on foot to explore Civita, leaving their bicycles in designated areas.

A New Connection Between Two Destinations

Route 01 was developed through the collaboration of the Municipality of Bolsena and the Municipality of Bagnoregio, with the aim of enhancing the landscape and encouraging new forms of sustainable tourism.

The route creates another connection between two destinations that share history, natural heritage and cultural projects.

This connection has been further strengthened by their joint designation as Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2028, awarded for the shared project “Arte che viene, arte che va”.
