Every year on 23 and 24 July, the town of Bolsena, on the shores of Lake Bolsena, celebrates its patron saint with one of Italy’s most remarkable religious traditions: The Mysteries of Saint Christina.
Recognised among the Italian Wonders, the Mysteries are an ancient historical and religious representation that has been handed down through generations. Through spectacular living tableaux, hundreds of participants recreate the most significant moments of the life and martyrdom of Saint Christina, transforming the historic centre of Bolsena into an open-air stage.
The performances take place on the evening of 23 July and the morning of 24 July, accompanying the most important celebrations of the patronal feast and offering visitors an authentic experience where faith, history and tradition come together.
More than a historical reenactment, the Mysteries of Saint Christina are a living cultural and religious heritage that continues to thrive thanks to the local community. It is a unique tradition that can only be experienced in the place where it was born: Bolsena.
