The Representation of the Passion of Christ winds through the streets of the historic center of Bolsena, creating an evocative and solemn atmosphere, and retraces the key stages of the last hours of Jesus' life, from the death sentence to the crucifixion.
Every year, on Good Friday, Bolsena transforms into an open-air stage to host one of the most deeply felt and evocative traditions of the area: the Historical Reenactment of the Passion of Christ.
It is not a simple procession, but a true itinerant drama that winds through the city streets, involving the entire community in an atmosphere of profound spirituality and participation.
The Route and the Scenes
The representation begins in Piazza Santa Cristina, right in the shadow of the famous Basilica. Here, the scene of the Cenacle is set up, where the Last Supper is narrated and interpreted with extreme care for historical and scenographic details.
The procession then moves towards the gardens adjacent to the main square, transformed for the occasion into the Garden of Olives. In this natural and evocative setting, visitors can witness the dramatic moment of Judas’ betrayal.
Towards Calvary
The procession continues by climbing towards the upper part of the town. Starting from the Castle Church, the procession of extras in period costumes accompanies Christ carrying the cross along the characteristic streets of the village. The march culminates once again at the Basilica of Santa Cristina, where the touching representation of the Crucifixion is staged.
