Cycling Around the Lake

Cycling the loop around Lake Bolsena is not just a sporting activity, but a true sensory journey.

Cycling Around the Lake

Cycling enthusiasts can explore nature by starting from the hills with breathtaking views, descending to the lake shores, and riding through the picturesque villages that overlook its waters.

The bike tour of the lake basin is one of the few routes in Italy that allows you to maintain almost constant visual contact with the water, offering a sense of freedom and peace that is hard to find elsewhere.

The route mainly follows quiet secondary roads, unpaved stretches surrounded by nature, and pedestrian lakefronts. It is a ride suitable for everyone: from experienced cyclists looking for a workout, to those who prefer the leisurely pace of an E-bike to enjoy the scenery without too much exertion.

A roughly 53 km route that is truly spectacular!
Starting from Bolsena, you proceed along the San Lorenzo lakefront, through Grotte di Castro, past the Chapel of San Magno, and on to Gradoli, finally arriving in Capodimonte. From there, you can detour to the ruins of Bisentium or continue toward Marta, reaching Montefiascone before heading back to Bolsena. Or you can do it in reverse if your legs are up for it!

It is a fairly easy, gently rolling route with a total elevation gain of 600 meters.
A Gravel or Mountain Bike is the best option to tackle the unpaved sections safely. However, an E-bike is highly recommended so you can enjoy the ride without worrying about the inclines, making the experience accessible to all.

Duration 3-4 hours for fit cyclists; 5-6 hours for a more relaxed, tourist-paced ride with photo stops.

Along the way, rest stops, equipped beaches, and picnic areas will make your experience even more enjoyable.

The ideal seasons are definitely spring and autumn:from March to June to admire the blooming flowers, or September and October for the warm autumn colors of the hills. If riding in the summer, it is highly recommended to start at dawn to enjoy the lake breeze.
